Why are feed supplements important
Animals are very particular of the amount of food they consume and do stop once they have devoured a significant bulk of food. However, if the nutrient content of the feed is low (which it often is due to poor quality, heat, age etc) the consumed feed will not be enough to meet the day-to-day requirements and they may remain malnourished, even if fed ad libitum. There are often cases of fully fed animals being weak and catching diseases, despite being fed properly.
Feed supplements are nutrient concentrates that are therapeutically designed to give a balanced nutrient portfolio to the animals. They are laced with necessary nutrients, for example, calcium and phosphorous for bone strengthening, amino acids, vitamins and minerals like, Co, Mg, Cu etc for muscle development and so on. Feed supplements are also designed for a special condition or special output. Like certain minerals and probiotics in the right concentration can help timely involution of the uterus in cattles. Other reasons for supplementing diets include increasing milk production, assisting with reproduction, building body mass etc.
Feed supplements are an integral part of animal rearing and choosing the right supplement comes with experience, observation and a relentless love for your animals.
